Increasing Diversity in Mathematical Sciences Summer School Call for Proposals
The Canadian Mathematics Research Institutes are pleased to announce a call for proposals to host the 2025 and 2026 Increasing Diversity in Mathematical & Related Sciences (IDMS) Summer School. This initiative is designed to enhance the participation of women and other underrepresented groups at advanced levels in the mathematical sciences.
We invite proposals from faculty groups interested in organizing the summer school for either 2025 or 2026.
The most recent program, held at Dalhousie University in 2024, focused on individuals who identify as women. For Summer 2025, we are seeking proposals aimed at supporting another underrepresented minority group. The 2026 program can be directed towards either group, depending on the proposals submitted.
Proposals should include:
A description of the target participants
An outline of the proposed program, including the mathematical topics to be covered and career development activities
The names of potential lecturers
Details about the hosting location and facilities
A budget covering room rentals, travel and accommodation, supplies, food and social events
Proposals must be submitted no later than Thursday, October 31, 2024.
The IDMS Summer School is a collaborative effort among the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS), the Banff International Research Station (BIRS), the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM), and the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences.
The estimated cost of running the program for 25 students is approximately \$60,000 per year. This includes \$1,000 per student for travel and \$1,000 per student for accommodation. Additionally, travel and accommodation for instructors will be covered, along with a modest budget for supplies and social events. While these figures are estimates, a detailed budget should be included in the proposal. The Institutes have collectively committed \$28,000 as seed funding for the program and will try to secure additional funding.
If you are interested in hosting the IDMS Summer School at your institution for the 2025 cohort, please contact Deirdre Haskell at dhaskell@fieldsinstitute.ca or Kasra Rafi at krafi@fieldsinstitute.ca for more information. Proposals for the 2026 cohort should be submitted directly to BIRS at birs-administrator@birs.ca.
Proposal deadline: October 31, 2024
