The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences Announces New Interim Co-Director International
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Gabriel Paternain as Interim Co-Director International of PIMS, beginning July 1, 2024. Professor Paternain is a faculty member at the University of Washington in the Department of Mathematics.
Gabriel Paternain obtained his Licenciatura from Universidad de la Republica in Uruguay in 1987 and his PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1991. After holding postdoctoral positions at the Max-Planck Institute in Bonn and the University of Maryland, he returned to Uruguay as Associate Professor of Mathematics.
He joined the University of Cambridge (UK) as a Lecturer in 2001 and became a Professor in 2008. He served as Head of the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics between 2014-18.
He has been Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, since 2001 and he joined the University of Washington as a Professor of Mathematics in 2023. He has held visiting professorships at IMPA (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil), CIMAT (Guanajuato, Mexico) and the University of Heidelberg.
Professor Paternain's research interests cover an ample mathematical landscape, including geometry, analysis, and dynamical systems. He is author of two books: Geodesic flows (1999) and Geometric inverse problems (2023) written jointly with Mikko Salo and Gunther Uhlmann.
