Ben Williams Wins 2018 PIMS | UBC Mathematics Faculty Award
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) is pleased to announce Dr. Benedict Williams as the recipient of the 2017 UBC Mathematics & Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences Faculty Award.
Dr. Williams received his Ph.D. from Stanford in 2010 under the supervision of Gunnar Carlsson and has since become one of the leading algebraic topologists in his age group. He and his coauthors have done important foundational work in equivariant and motivic homotopy theory, and have used this "heavy machinery" to shed new light on, and in some cases completely settle, a number of long-standing open problems in algebra.
In 2015, in recognition of Ben's research accomplishments, the Department of Mathematics at UBC took the extraordinary step of promoting him from a postdoctoral fellow to an assistant professor.
As the recipient of this award, D. Williams will receive $1000 and will be invited to give a lecture in the fall of 2018.
Congratulations Dr. Williams!.
