Melania Alvarez to Receive CMS 2012 Adrien Pouliot AwardÂ
PIMS is proud to announce that Melania Alvarez, PIMS’ BC Education Coordinator, is the recipient of the Canadian Mathematical Society’s 2012 Adrien Pouliot Award in recognition of her contributions to mathematics education in Canada. The award will be presented at the meeting of the CMS in Montreal in December, 2012.
“Melania Alvarez has been dedicated to mathematics education in Canada for nearly a decade,” said Peter Taylor, Chair of the CMS Selection Committee for the Adrien Pouliot Award. “While she has made many notable contributions in the area of education, she is most recognized for her work with First Nations students.”
“Her work with First Nations schools, workshops for their teachers, and her summer camps for First Nations students are already showing impact on whole communities.” said Malgorzata Dubiel (PIMS-SFU), winner of the 2011 Adrien Pouliot Award.
Through PIMS, she actively promotes mathematics through the organization of numerous events and activities including an Elementary Mathematics Contest (ELMACON), Math Manias, workshops for elementary and secondary students and teachers, as well as fundraising.
In addition to her position as BC Education Coordinator, Alvarez is also Outreach Coordinator for the UBC Mathematics Department and is a member of the CMS Subcommittee on Mathematics for Elementary Teachers.
