Marcelo Laca Appointed PIMS UVic Site Director
The Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences is
pleased to announce that Dr. Marcelo Laca has been appointed PIMS site director
at the University of Victoria for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2012.
Dr. Laca is a full professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Victoria, where he has been a faculty member since 2001. He obtained his Ph.D. at the University of California-Berkeley and held postdoctoral and visiting positions at Dartmouth, Newcastle and Muenster.
His main areas of expertise are C*-algebras, C*-dynamical systems and semigroup crossed products. He was one of the main organizersfor the recent PIMS Collaborative Research Group on Operator Algebras and Non-commutative Geometry.
PIMS would like to express its appreciation for the valuable contributions made by Dr. Ian Putnam, the outgoing PIMS site director at the University of Victoria.
