CMS/PIMS delegation attends meeting of the Korean Mathematical Society
At the invitation of Dohan Kim, President of the Korean Mathematical Society (KMS), a delegation of Canadian mathematicians sponsored by the Canadian Mathematical Society and PIMS attended the recent KMS meeting in South Korea (October 23-25, 2008). The delegation was led by Anthony Lau (President of the CMS, University of Alberta) and included Alejandro Adem (Director of PIMS, UBC), Nicole Tomczak-Jaegermann (University of Alberta) and Roland Speicher (Queens University).
The Canadian delegates all gave invited lectures at the meeting, which was held at the convention center in the scenic Jeju Island. Further collaborations between the Canadian and Korean mathematical communities are contemplated, including a joint CMS/KMS special session co-sponsored by PIMS at the summer meeting of the CMS to take place in Newfoundland in June 2009.
Before attending the congress, the Canadian delegation visited the Korean Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) at the invitation of Jonghae Keum.
PIMS Director Alejandro Adem noted:
"This meeting was important for the further development of ties between Canadian and Korean mathematicians.
As Director of PIMS I was glad to be able to participate in this joint CMS/KMS initiative which has been developed by the presidents of the two societies (Dohan Kim and Anthony Lau). Establishing strong links with countries in the Pacific Rim is a priority for CMS and PIMS, and I look forward to the reciprocal event which will take place at Memorial University of Newfoundland next June".
