How can we convince non-math majors that vector spaces are cool? How can we design activities that lead to heated debate and audible gasps in our calculus classrooms? When students are curious, they learn better. But helping students see value in an abstract course can be difficult.
In this talk, I will share explicit examples of in-class activities and assessments I have designed to boost motivation and promote active engagement in my first-year calculus and second-year linear algebra courses. We will explore strategies for combating illusions of mastery, fostering proof-writing development, and encouraging self-efficacy to set students up for success.
