Changing the Culture 2020
Details
The annual Changing the Culture Conference, organized and sponsored by the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, brings together mathematicians, mathematics educators and school teachers from all levels to work together towards narrowing the gap between mathematicians and teachers of mathematics, and between those who do and enjoy mathematics and those who think they don't.

Date: September 2nd, 2020
Location: Online
As in past years, registration for this event is free, but you are asked to complete the registration form if you want to participate in the conference.
Following the success of this year's online Changing the Culture conference we have decided to create a mailing list to share news and details of upcoming events with interested educators. We are also looking into organizing additional online events to further the goals of changing the culture. Details of these events will be shared on the mailing list. If you are interested, please sign up here.
Conference Program: (All times in PDT)
9:15 Opening Remarks
9:30 Plenary Talk: Shifting from Computational Thinking to Computational Modelling in Math Education George Gadanidis, Western University
More and more we are becoming interested in how computational modelling might be useful in teaching and learning mathematics, by seeing computation as a tool to think rather than a object of study. In classrooms we work in, computational modelling offers access (aka low floor / high ceiling or differentiated instruction), a tangible /dynamic feel for abstract concepts, and opportunities for incidental learning. See examples from grades 1-3 and 10 at the links below:
