Let k be a field of characteristic p>0. I will explain how the work of Frankland and Spitzweck gives rise to Steenrod operations on the mod p motivic cohomology of smooth schemes defined over k. By comparing the operations over a base field of characteristic p to operations defined over a base field of characteristic 0, we show that the new operations satisfy expected properties such as the Adem relations and Cartan formula when restricted to mod p Chow groups.
