Mathematics and HIV
Topic
Operations Research and Network Modeling for HIV Treatment and Prevention
Speakers
Details
Operations research utilizes a variety of mathematical modeling techniques to improve workflows, procedures and operations within organizations or programs, and to guide planning and management decisions. Among countless applications, network models have been used to study epidemics of infectious disease. Network modeling and operations research are often applied independently to questions related to the HIV epidemic. However, the intersection of these fields is an emerging area of research.
This workshop, hosted by the IMAPCT-HIV group at the IRMACS Centre at Simon Fraser University, will study current knowledge and potential approaches that could arise through combining network modeling and operations research to applications in HIV epidemiology. Specifically, we will focus on how the intersection of these fields could be used to facilitate implementation of the HIV Treatment as Prevention strategy – the cornerstone of the global response to the HIV pandemic. (Mathematics and HIV will precede the International HIV Treatment as Prevention Workshop held April 1-4, 2014 in Vancouver.)
The program will include presentations by leading researchers, a hands-on tutorial session to introduce the NepidemiX software package, and an oral poster session. The workshop venue, IRMACS, is situated in stunning natural surroundings on top of Burnaby Mountain in British Columbia, Canada, with excellent transit connections to downtown Vancouver.
