Ideas and Resources for Grades 3-6 Mathematics Teachers
Details
Participants will experience hands-on, inquiry based mathematics activities, each with an Aboriginal theme and directly connected to learning outcomes in the Saskatchewan elementary mathematics curriculum. These activities were designed for students in grades 3 to 6 by students in the Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) at the University of Regina, with guidance from two faculty members in mathematics and mathematics education (the facilitators of this workshop). The activities formed the basis of two recent workshops delivered to grades 4 and 6 teachers in Regina, as well as a research project which explored teachers’ perceptions of, and insights into, Aboriginal perspectives in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Additional Information
This workshop will be presented at the Saskatchewan Understands Mathematics conference in Saskatoon and is part of a PIMS supported initiative at the University of Regina called Aboriginal Perspectives. For mor information visit: http://aboriginalperspectives.uregina.ca/
