The course will focus on models of neuronal networks and infectious diseases on networks. The first half of the course will introduce deterministic models of infectious diseases, then proceed to network models. Some case studies of particular diseases, e.g. influenza, will be included. The second half of the course will introduce the basic mechanisms underlying neuronal dynamics and how these lead to various neuronal network models. Applications of such models in particular settings, such as working memory, central pattern generation (e.g. for respiration), hallucinations, and Parkinson's disease, will be presented. For each part of the course, students will work on group projects and use mathematical software, e.g. Maple, Matlab. The required biology will be taught in parallel with the mathematics and modeling.
PREREQUISITES: Differential equations, linear algebra. Introductory modeling is recommended.

The full summer school course is UVic course MATH 575/475 Topics in Mathematical Biology, which may be taken for credit. Students (including IGTC students) seeking credit must register for the full course, which comprises both halves of the program.Students are responsible for the registration of the course through University of Victoria. Graduate students can do so through Western Deans' Agreement.

Students should apply for the course (clearly stating whether they are applying for the full course or for one half) and arrange for their supervisor to send a letter of support (this letter is not required for IGTC students). There is a $50 registration fee for each half course. For those who take the course for credit, this registration fee will be refunded.
